About Us

I, Nisha Phillip Malahoo, am an educator driven by a passion to bring about positive change, advocate for my community, and build connections that empower both students and neighborhoods. Over the course of ten fulfilling years, I've dedicated myself to teaching at Pinewood Elementary School, a Title I institution nestled in Orange County. My journey has shown me that with determination, one person's efforts can lead to transformative impacts on lives and entire communities.

My story begins with my own struggle—a personal challenge with math during my childhood. This adversity ignited my desire to reshape how students perceive mathematics, turning it from a source of fear to one of excitement and opportunity. Seeking growth and innovative teaching approaches, I pursued a master's degree in K-8 mathematics and science education through the UCF Lockheed Martin Academy. This remarkable program aims to enhance STEM education across Central Florida.

The journey of learning wasn't just about me; it was about transforming my classroom into a hub of positive math experiences. I adapted my teaching methods based on what I learned, creating an innovative model that resonated with fellow educators. This journey underscores the significance of continuous learning and evolving teaching techniques to meet the diverse needs of students.

Yet my dedication goes beyond academics. When the pandemic struck, I witnessed the challenges faced by my students and their families—job losses, food insecurity, and uncertainty. This reality fueled my determination to take action. I established a community library in my front yard, providing much-needed books to children who lacked access during virtual learning.

However, my efforts didn't stop at books. I, along with the nonprofit Above and Beyond for Change, orchestrated Thanksgiving meal drives, ensuring families in need received pre-cooked dinners. The support of organizations like Above and Beyond for Change underscored the potential of community like folks to drive change beyond the confines of a classroom.

These initiatives soon became community touchpoints, from coat distributions to Valentine's Day packages. These events not only provided practical assistance but also brought our community closer. Collaborating with local law enforcement, I worked to foster unity and understanding, especially during these challenging times.

One remarkable highlight of my journey was partnering with Above and Beyond for Change to provide over 100 bicycles to my students. This initiative not only eased their neighborhood travels but also encouraged physical activity. This achievement reflects my unwavering commitment to inspiring transformation and improving lives, showing that education transcends textbooks.

Today I am a scholar and community advocate.. With the support of my husband, Howard and kids Gabriella and Joshua, I firmly believe in the potential power of collective action. With their assistance, I believe that our combined efforts underscore that positive change begins with compassion, commitment, and a deep belief in the educational journey's ability to transform lives and communities.
